KwaZulu-Natal Athletics bided farewell to its athletes as they headed off to Johannesburg to join the rest of the South Africa team going to Croatia for the 2018 IAU 100km World Championships which will be held on the 8th of September this year.
The send-off was held today, (4th of September) at the Kings Park Athletics Stadium. It was attended by the four athletics, Bongumusa Mthembu, Nkosinathi Duma, Fikile Mbuthuma, Lisa Collett and team manager, Xolani Mabida.
The event was also attended by the KZNA staff and the President of KZNA, Mr Sello Mokoena and General Manager, Mr Goodman Cele. The media was also present.
The athletes were each given a KZNA tracksuit and a cash prize as a token of appreciation.
Xolani Mabida said that this is a great opportunity for KZN because it is the first time that KZNA dominates the national team.
“I am very happy because this means that we are improving our performances,” he said.
Thuso Mosiea said that the opportunity to represent your country is very important to each and every athlete and that he is hoping to do well. “We have a well experienced team and I believe that we will all work well together and achieve great results,” Mosiea said.
Three times Comrade Marathon winner, Bongumusa Mthembu said that this is a global event and there is no athlete representing his or her country that is taking this event lightly. “I am well prepared and I want to use the experience that I got from the last championships to win this one,” he said.
