Bongumusa Mthembu sets a new SA record at World 100km Championships

Bongumusa Mthembu, who hails from Bulwer in the Midlands and the 2014 Comrades Marathon Champion, flew the national flag high yesterday at the World 100km Championships in Alcararez, Spain

Mthembu took the lead with 20km remaining with only Hideaki Yamauchi of Japan looming on his

shoulder. The Japanese eventually overtook Mthembu in the final 10km to pull clear and claim Gold

in a new record, 6:18,22. The South African hung on to claim the only individual podium finish for

the country, clocking 6:24,09 for a well-deserved silver gong and also set a New South African

100km record, bettering Bruce Fordyce’s 17 year old mark by 70 seconds

Team South Africa were however rewarded for their aggressive early pace with a Gold medal,

beating the resurgence of Japan and the USA

KZN Athletics in Association with its partners, the KZN Department of Sport & Recreation and the

Comrades Marathon Association are proud to have unearthed and nurtured such a world class athlete

in the province. The athletics family in the province and country should expect to see more from this

dedicated runner

This strong showing by the South African Team yesterday at the gathering of the best the world can

offer in ultra-marathon running acted as a strong marketing tool for ultra-marathon running in South

Africa, and events such as the Two Oceans and the provincial classic, the Comrades Marathon, can

now expect to see runners such as Yamauchi taking keen interest in the near future
